Technology products: what they are and how they adapt to people

10 min read

What are technology products? Discover how to adapt them to people, their real needs and the key role of technology advisors.

When working with technology products, it's tempting to focus only on their features and innovations from a purely technical point of view. Yet we must not forget that these products will be used by people who need concrete solutions, and that is where technology advisors should place greater emphasis.

What are technology products and what are they for?

Technology products are one of the most visible manifestations of scientific progress and of humanity's ability to turn knowledge into useful tools. They are objects, devices or systems created through the application of technology in order to meet needs, solve problems or improve quality of life. From the earliest mechanical tools to today's smart devices, technology products have accompanied the evolution of society, marking milestones in the way we communicate, work, learn and entertain ourselves.

In essence, a technology product is the result of combining science, engineering and design to shape practical solutions. It is not limited to electronic devices, even though these are the most recognisable; it also covers software, digital applications, industrial machinery, medical instruments and transport systems. What characterises them is their ability to optimise processes, reduce effort and broaden human possibilities across different fields.

The usefulness of these products is as diverse as the fields in which they are applied. In the realm of communication, for example, mobile phones and digital platforms have revolutionised the way people interact, enabling instant connection between individuals thousands of kilometres apart. In the workplace, laptops, management software and online collaboration tools have multiplied productivity and made way for new forms of organisation. In education, technology products have opened doors to remote learning, interactivity and personalised content, democratising access to knowledge.

Health is another sector where technology products play a key role. Advanced diagnostic equipment, monitoring devices and wellness applications help improve the prevention and treatment of disease, while allowing people to keep more precise track of their physical condition. At home, smart home appliances and home automation systems simplify everyday tasks, save energy and provide greater comfort. In leisure, video game consoles, the latest televisions and streaming platforms have transformed cultural and entertainment experiences.

Beyond their practical role, technology products have a profound impact on society. They have changed habits, created new professions and generated entire industries. They have also raised challenges, such as technological dependence, the digital divide and the need for responsible, sustainable use. Yet their influence is undeniable: they are drivers of innovation and competitiveness, and key parts of the economic and cultural development of nations.

Technology products are much more than mere objects; they represent the human ability to imagine and bring solutions to life that broaden our possibilities. They serve to make life easier, optimise processes and open up horizons once unimaginable. Their everyday presence reminds us that technology is not an end in itself, but a means of improving existence and projecting a future in which creativity and knowledge become tools of progress.

Types of technology products

Technology products cover a wide range of tools, devices and systems designed to make human life easier and optimise processes in different fields. They are the result of applying scientific and technical knowledge to creating practical solutions that respond to social, economic and cultural needs. As they are used widely in our daily lives, they have transformed the way we communicate, work, learn and entertain ourselves, becoming essential elements in the development of contemporary society.

Over time, these products have diversified into multiple categories, each with specific functions and a particular impact on daily life. Knowing the main types of technology products helps us better understand how they influence our environment and how they fit into different sectors.

Main types of technology products

These enable information to be transmitted between people or institutions quickly and efficiently. They enable real-time interaction, remove geographical barriers and drive globalisation. Today they are essential for personal and professional life, as they enable coordinating activities, sharing data and maintaining social ties.

These focus on the handling, processing and organisation of data. They turn information into useful knowledge, automate tasks and offer digital solutions tailored to different sectors. They are key in education, research and business administration.

Designed for leisure and recreation, these transform cultural and entertainment experiences. They offer immersive experiences, foster creativity and enable new forms of social interaction through digital entertainment.

These apply technology to caring for body and mind. They improve the prevention and treatment of disease, allow more precise health monitoring and improve quality of life.

These are tools and systems that drive production and mobility. They optimise production processes, reduce costs, improve safety and support sustainability in key sectors of the economy.

Designed to make household tasks easier and improve everyday comfort. They save time and energy, deliver comfort and enable a more efficient, connected lifestyle.

These integrate technology into learning and teaching. They democratise access to knowledge, support personalised teaching and encourage active student participation.

Ultimately, technology products fall into different categories based on their function and application, but they all share the same purpose: to improve human life and expand our capabilities. Their diversity reflects the breadth of technology and its capacity to adapt to the needs of each era and sector.

How to adapt technology products to people's real needs

In the webinar ‘Real solutions to bring technology products closer to people.', Iñaki Pérez explains the importance of technology products adapting to the real demands of users. In other words, they should respond to the needs of the people who will use them. In this process, technology advisors play a fundamental role, as they are the intermediaries that make it happen.

A technology advisor is a professional expert in information technology (IT) and digital systems who provides strategic guidance and specialist advice. Their main mission is to help companies adapt to digital transformation, optimise processes and make better-informed strategic decisions.

The value of the technology advisor

Technology advisors inspire confidence in those approaching technology without in-depth knowledge. Their role is to translate technical complexity into clear, useful solutions tailored to the level of each user. At Simon, we always work by offering personalised solutions, fitted to each need and profile.

Technology products as solutions

A technology product should not be presented only through its technical features. Technology is always a means whose purpose is to solve a problem or meet a specific need. That's why it's more accurate to talk about technology solutions: tools that apply innovation to improve the user's life. The real value of technology lies in its practical usefulness.

The advisor as ambassador of technology

Users know they have a need that technology can solve. At this point, the technology advisor becomes a technology ambassador, a bridge between the user and the solution. Their job is to offer tailored solutions — not isolated products — understanding how technology fits into the everyday life of the average user.

At Simon, we put this approach into action with our free eBook on Lighting Control Systems, where we show how to integrate control and regulation features to create environments that generate feelings and improve the user experience.

Factors that influence the person-technology relationship

There are four factors or elements that will shape how a person relates to technology and, consequently, with any technology product.

1. Assimilation

It is important to bear in mind that not everyone absorbs technology at the same speed or pace. That's why, before offering them any kind of technology product, you have to consider what kind of technological background they have. This will determine how to present the technology product, as well as their ability to show interest in it. If a product becomes part of everyday life, it has been assimilated.

2. Advanced function

When it comes to technology, it is important to distinguish between design and technology proper. The two are often mistaken for each other. But when we talk about advanced function, we mean that the technology product can offer the user greater usefulness or functionality when used. So, although there may be new technology products with striking aesthetics or design, the question must be: how does it really benefit the user? If the technology product improves the customer's comfort or usability, it is a product that is genuinely offering them an advanced function.

3. Accessibility (Plan A, B, C)

Technology must be accessible. For this reason, a technology product should not be exclusive of other technologies, but inclusive. A good example is the use of light switches. This is a technology that can today be replaced by an app or a voice assistant. However, if these new technologies are not accessible to everyone, the best approach is to have all the technologies that offer a solution coexist. This ensures there will always be a solution for every type of user, whether they choose solution A, B or C.

4. Motivation

Finally, another of the aspects that shapes the way a user approaches a technology product is motivation. Motivation can range from interest in the product to comfort, pride or any other reason. In this regard, the most important thing is for technology advisors to understand that their motivation is part of the argument when presenting and convincing the user to use a given technology product. Technology must be presented in relation to the user's motivation. Without that motivation, it will not be used, no matter how novel or disruptive it may be.

These four factors are key when establishing a relationship between the technology product and the person. They are also key elements to bear in mind when presenting that product to the user or potential customer, as that is what will truly deliver the solutions they are looking for in technology.
